Essential Oil Treatments for Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea is a condition of abnormally painful menstruation, generally characterized by severe abdominal cramps. Rose oil can be used to relieve menstrual cramps, as well as neroli. Spearmint oil has antispasmodic properties, so is often used as a massage oil (mixed with a carrier oil such as almond or evening primrose) to help alleviate muscular and abdominal pain experienced during menstruation.
Lavender and and marjoram are also antispasmodic. Sweet fennel oil is an Emmenagogue that helps to relieve the pain of dysmenorrhea. Sage, which was considered sacred by Native Americans, is also very effective in alleviating menstrual cramps.
