Essential Oil Treatments for Colds

A cold is an infection that typically causes sneezing, a sore throat and inflamed mucous membrane. Diffusing and inhaling any essential oil with antibacterial and antiviral properties will trigger an antimicrobial action that will protect you from cold and flu viruses. Spearmint and peppermint oils, as menthols, are excellent for relieving colds and nasal congestion, particularly when inhaled.

Oregano oil also has very strong anti-microbial properties and, taken by mouth, can help you to get rid of a cold quickly. Historically, the aborigines of Australia have used eucalyptus oil, another menthol, copiously for centuries, which has a significant effect on infections and completely eliminates Staph aureus within 15 minutes, due to its powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Application Usages

Massage Oils Application

Select 20-30 drops of your preferred essential oils for colds and mix with 2 ounces of a carrier oil (grapeseed oil is a good option). You can apply the mixture on the chest, neck and nose.

Bath Application
Take 15-20 drops of your preferred essential oils for colds and mix with 2 ounces of carrier oil of your choosing. Apply the mixture into the water only after the water has stopped flowing. Add the mixture while the water is running can evaporate the mixture and reduce the potency.

Diffusion Application
Select 8-10 drops of your preferred essential oils for colds and pour into diffuser. Take deep breaths and inhale the essential oil aroma.

Steam Application
Take 7 drops of your preferred essential oil for colds and apply to a large pot or bowl of boiling water. Lean over the bowl and cover head with towel to prevent steam from escaping. Close eyes and take deep breaths through the nose for 1-2 minute intervals. Make sure to approximately having a 10 inch gap between you and the bowl as to prevent steam burn.

Cloth Application
Apply 2-4 drops of preferred essential oil for colds onto cloth/tissue.
Hold cloth or tissue in the palms of your hand and take 2-3 deep breaths through the nose. If inhaling through a cotton ball, gently waft the cotton ball under the nose and take 2-3 deep inhalations. This method of application can be used 2-3 times or can vary depending on when needed.
