The Roman Chamomile essential oil has a strong reputation as a medical herb in Europe and especially in the Mediterranean region for over 2000 years and is still prominently used today.

The oil was traditionally employed by the Moors and Egyptians and was considered as one of the nine sacred herbs by the Saxons which they referred to as ‘maythen’. The Roman Chamomile also had a reputation as the ‘plant’s physician’ since it promoted the health of nearby plants.

The plant is currently used in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for its treatment of dyspepsia, anorexia, nausea, vomiting in pregnancy, dysmenorrhea and especially flatulent dyspepsia associated with mental stress.

[dropcap style=”font-size: 25px; color: #ff9900;”]M[/dropcap]ethod of Extraction

The Roman Chamomile essential oil is extracted via Steam Distillation from the flowers of the plant.

The botanical material (Chamaemelum Nobile) is placed in a still and hot steam. The aromatic molecules from the plant material are released as the hot steam excretes out the oils kept within the plant material. The molecules of these precious and volatile oils escape the plant and evaporate into the steam.

The temperature of the steam is carefully controlled to ensure that the plant material and the essential oil are not burned but is hot enough for the extraction of the essential oils out of the plant.

The steam which contains the essential oil passes through a cooling system to condense the steam into a liquid. The liquid substance which contains both water and the essential oil are separated. The essential oils are then stored in a dark and cool environment to maintain optimal potency levels and reduce oxidation.

[dropcap style=”font-size: 25px; color: #76bc41;”]C[/dropcap]emistry Testing

Using industry best practices, the Roman Chamomile essential oil is tested with a Gas Chromotographic Spectrometer to ensure that correct beneficial compounds are at the essential levels required for a true therapeutic effect.

The essential oils must go through a meticulous quality assurance test to ensure that the essential oil has the right aroma, color and viscosity.
