Essential Oil Treatments for Bacterial and Viral Infections

Bacterial and viral infections are illnesses caused by harmful bacteria and viruses, including influenza, and are commonly treated with antibiotics. Most essential oils will have some antibacterial and antiviral properties, and lower the pH of the body, creating an inhospitable environment for bacteria, though particularly effective at fighting infection (by promoting the production of white blood cells) and healing are bergamot, lavender, myrrh, lemon, sandalwood, vetiver, and tea tree, which has been used to kill microbes for literally thousands of years.

Diffusing most essential oils can also help keep viruses and bacteria in check, as you will inhale the oils and benefit from their properties throughout the day, as it will stimulate antimicrobial action. In the mid-16th century, essential oil blends were used to combat illnesses such as the plague, particularly juniper, pine and laurel. In the Dark Ages, the Church considered bathing sinful, and so antibacterial aromatic oils were used to mask unpleasant odours and promote hygiene.
People release pheromones, which affect hormones, fertility and libido, and when secreted will attract the opposite sex; plants also secrete pheromones, and thus essential oils can have a powerful effect on the human body and mind. The use of stimulating essential oils, such as cinnamon, ginger, jasmine and patchouli can be used in massage and aromatherapy to ease sexual difficulty and dysfunction. Sandalwood is also a natural aphrodisiac, and improves libido.
