Essential Oil Recipes for Constipation

Constipation is the inability to empty the bowels, or difficulty in doing so regularly, often accompanied with hardened feces, causing varying levels of discomfort and pain depending on severity. This can be a temporary or chronic condition, and affects individuals of all ages; chronic constipation can have a significant impact on quality of life. Constipation can be caused by insufficient fiber being absorbed through one’s diet, insufficient consumption of fluids, a change in lifestyle, and as a side effect of some medication. It is also commonly a symptom of anxiety or stress. Many natural substances and essential oils have laxative properties, and so have been traditionally and historically used to alleviate constipation and improve the functioning of the digestive tract.

Black Pepper Oil balances digestive functions, treats constipation, sluggish bowels and gas. Black Pepper is a known laxative in many countries. Cinnamon Leaf oil is great in treating conditions which might lead to constipation, such as nervous exhaustion and stress-related conditions, thereby eliminating constipation in the process. Pink Grapefruit oil is a lymphatic and digestive stimulant and helps with constipation due to performance stress.

Sweet Marjoram oil is considered a laxative and can treat colicflatulence and constipation. Most herbalists rub two or three drops between their abdomen and colon and get immediate relief within minutes. Rosemary Oil is used to treat constipation due to nervous exhaustion. Herbalists usually use this oil in an aromatherapy-type setting with either a pot of steaming water or by putting oil drops in a bathtub of warm water and soaking in it.
