Essential Oils for Fever, Cold and Flu
Colds are an extremely common ailment affecting individuals of all ages across the globe, most commonly during winter seasons. Colds can often be accompanied by a fever, which is characterized by sweats and a high temperature above the body’s normal range. A fever can be the body’s way of trying to flush out and eliminate viruses and bacteria – the causes of colds – from the body, by making the body a hostile environment for bacteria and viruses to exist and replicate within, as they are sensitive to temperature. However, fevers can be dangerous, particularly in children and the elderly, as they can lead to dangerous spikes in body temperature. Eucalyptus oil is traditionally known as ‘fever oil’ due to its popularity and effectiveness in treating fever, and the calming properties of lavender make it suitable for relieving fever-related distress.
Before trying essential oils on you or any children, please have a conversation with your doctor, you may need medication if the fever has lasted longer than 24 hours or is very high.
