Amyris is an essential oil that is commonly known as West Indian Sandalwood oil. However, the common name is somewhat misleading because it is not actually a version of Sandalwood oil. It is believed to be known as that because the oil is steam distilled from wood chips of the tree. It can be described as smelling sweet and smoky. When used in aromatherapy, it is known to aid in relieving stress and calming one’s nerves.

Until 1886, the botanical origin of the tree yielding this oil remained unclear. Eventually, apothecaries identified striking differences between this plant and the true sandalwood, through microscopic examination of the leaves. The botanical name of the Amyris oil was changed from Schimmerelia Oleisera to Amyris Balsamifera in recognition of the discovery.

The indigenous people call the tree “candle wood” due to its high oil content, which makes it burn similar to a Candle. The Amyris – West Indian Sandalwood oil was traditionally used as a torch by fisherman and traders. The tree was also made into exceptional furniture wood.

The molecules of these precious and volatile oils escape the plant and evaporate into the steam.

The temperature of the steam is carefully controlled to ensure that the plant material and the essential oil are not burned but is hot enough for the extraction of the essential oils out of the plant.

The steam which contains the essential oil passes through a cooling system to condense the steam into a liquid. The liquid substance which contains both water and the essential oil are separated.
